Plymouth is a seaside city on the south coast of the UK. The town’s name probably originates from the River Plym that joins the coast just east of Plymouth. With it’s strong sea connections, the town’s economy has been strongly influenced by shipbuilding, but has become a more service-based economy since the 90s.

In geological terms, Plymouth is made up of a mixture of limestone, Devonian slate, granite and Middle Devonian limestone which has influenced the architecture of the town. Plymouth’s oldest surviving house, Prysten House, built in 1498, was built entirely from local Plymouth Limestone and Dartmoor granite.

The town has been home to many notable names, especially explorers: Sir Francis Drake was born locally and was elected mayor of Plymouth in 1581, and Antarctic explorers Robert Falcon Scott and Frank Bickerton both lived in the city.
