From chatting over the garden fence to sharing a roast dinner with family, new research from Anglian Home Improvements has uncovered the everyday moments that continue to bring communities across the UK together and why they matter now more than ever.
For over 60 years, Anglian has been part of homes and neighbourhoods across Britain. To mark this milestone year, we wanted to better understand the role community plays in everyday life today.
So, we asked 2,000 people across the UK a simple question: "What brings us together?"
It’s the little things that matter most
The results show it’s not big events or major milestones that unite us; it’s the small, familiar moments we share every day. From talking about the weather to swapping tips on our gardens and homes, these conversations often form the fabric of our communities.
In fact, more than half of us still regularly chat with neighbours, whether that’s over the garden fence or on the doorstep.
These everyday interactions might feel small, but they play a powerful role in helping people feel connected to where they live.
Community still matters, more than ever
While these moments remain part of British life, the research also highlights a clear shift in how people feel about their communities today.
Together, these findings point to something important: the desire for community hasn’t gone away, but many feel it needs more support to thrive.
Giving something back to the communities that support us
At Anglian, we’ve seen first-hand the difference that strong communities make. That’s why, to celebrate our 60th anniversary, we’re launching our 60 for 60 community campaign. This initiative will provide a share of £60,000 to support 60 grassroots community groups across the UK helping local projects, spaces and organisations continue the vital work they do every day.
From community centres and sports clubs to volunteer-led groups and local charities, the campaign is designed to recognise and support the people and places that bring communities together.
Could your community benefit?
We know there are incredible groups making a difference in neighbourhoods across the country, often with limited resources.
Whether it’s improving a shared space, supporting local residents, or bringing people together through activities and events, we want to hear your story.
Help your community thrive
If you know a project or group that deserves support, nominate your community today and be part of something that makes a lasting difference.
