Jack Piper reports on first tests

Following on from our first interview with Jack Piper and previous annoucement that Anglian Home Improvements will be sponsoring him in the 2009 Formula Renault BARC series, first tests in the new car took place at the weekend and Jack gives us an insight into how he got on:

“It’s a big week for the team with our first race in the Formula Renault BARC Championship coming up at Donington this weekend. We tested there last week, which was very important for me because I’d never driven the circuit before.

Things went well, but conditions could have been better. It was dry in the morning and we thought we’d got away with the forecast of rain but just as we left the pits for the third time I felt a few spots of rain on my visor. Two laps later I was in for wets. I don’t why it is, but just about everytime I’ve tested at a new circuit it’s been wet!

We spent most of the afternoon diving in and out of the pits to change from wet tyres to slicks and then back again as the showers came and went. Ideally, it would have been better to get more dry testing so I could push the car a little more, but it was good experience and at least it meant I got a flavour of what to expect if the weather’s unpredictable again this weekend.

It was cool to test on the full Donington Grand Prix circuit where the likes of Valentino Rossi were racing only a few days earlier in the Moto GP bike series and of course the British Grand Prix is meant to be moving there next year. I thought it was a great track with lots of quick flowing corners. It also has some steep declines, meaning you really can really carry a lot of speed around.

We’ll be heading for Donington on Thursday with a busy weekend ahead. Friday is another test day, so fingers crossed on the weather. On Saturday it’s qualifying which will give me and the Falcon Motorsport team a first chance to see how we stand against the rest of the field. Then on Sunday the real action begins with two races, both over 14 laps, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. There should be around 20 cars on the grid. It’s difficult to know what to expect in terms of results given it’s my first race of the season, but I’ll be giving it my very best, for sure!”
