Anglian Home Improvements are the sponsors of this years Britain in Bloom. We have been receiving applications for upcoming projects for communities across the UK. Here is one from Waveney Court.
We are entering Britain in Bloom as part of the community project to raise awareness of our scheme as well as to get involved with as many people and projects in the community as possible. We also plan to raise awareness of our surroundings incorporating recycling, nature and uniting some of the more vulnerable, younger and other agencies as well .
We approached the local PCSO’s, neighbouring housing associations, local residents and schools to see if they were interested in joining us to create a real sense of community spirit in entering this competition. Everyone was enthusiastic so a meeting was arranged and an agenda drawn up. The local police came along with the housing officers from the council and began painting fences, digging , removing debris and cutting hedges.
The year 10 pupils from the school came to plant shrubs and plants along with some young boys who were involved in a cohesion from school to assist with all kinds of maintenance and restructure. 15 school children will attend and build and erect bird boxes around the garden as well as designing a water feature out of recycled material. Some local residents will come and help and the local LAP will also get involved and have offered to donate some plants to our project. We raise all money ourselves and now we struggling to finish the project we have started.
This will have a great impact on the residents who live here as it will achieve more community involvement and the opportunity for them to integrate with the outside as well as building bridges between the younger and older generation. By involving the cohesion side it will break down barriers and prejudices and build a strong foundation not only for the residents but also give the ones less fortunate a chance of belonging and self worth. It will provide a strong foundation for the future with the school and community police combining harmony and a real community spirit.
The children have also enjoyed talking to the elderly residents and have learned a lot about nature, gardening and also the lives of these people. The cohesion side has had a real positive effect in this diverse community and there is a sense of pride between all involved.
This project is breaking down barriers between generations and providing some of our vulnerable and less able residents the opportunity to mix and socialize with people that they would not usually have the opportunity to.
