More than one hundred Women’s Institute (WI) members attended a successful educational day hosted by Anglian Home Improvements on 22 September, held at the WI’s residential college Denman in Oxfordshire.
The ladies attended from twelve different WI Federations, travelling from as far afield as Wiltshire, Worcestershire and Shropshire to attend the event, entitled ‘A Modern Look at Home Improvements’.
Energy saving in the home was a particular focus of the day, with guests learning about what to look for when upgrading windows, the real differences between double and triple glazing, and how to interpret energy ratings in order to work out how much money they could save. They were also given practical information and advice concerning their consumer rights when it comes to cold calling, both in person and on the telephone.
Actress Sally Geeson and TV gardener David Domoney were guest speakers at the event and proved a highlight with the WI members. Sally talked about her experience as an Anglian customer before becoming a brand ambassador last year, while David’s ‘confessions of a show gardener’ kept the audience entertained. To round off the day, David invited three WI members onto the stage to compete in a ‘galloping gardening’ competition, creating interesting plant displays using an assorted range of containers and everyday items including a saucepan, a cookie jar and an old boot.
Melanie McDonald, Head of Marketing and Communications at Anglian Home Improvements, said, “It was lovely to meet so many enthusiastic members of the Women’s Institute at Denman, who were keen to learn more about home improvements. We had a number of very insightful questions from the floor, provoking some lively debate and discussion on wide ranging topics, such as the best window options for retaining energy or improving light in the home and the safety requirements for removing asbestos. We were delighted to be able to interact with such a discerning and informed audience, and look forward to future events with the WI.”
Anglian Home Improvements hosted the educational day as part of a programme of activity it has been running with the WI this year; which has included participation in the NFWI Annual Meeting and a VIP day for the Norfolk Federation of the WI at the new Norwich showroom, including a ‘behind the scenes’ factory tour and a talk by brand ambassador, Sally Geeson.
