Anglian Come to The Rescue for Cowboy Builders

August 27th, 2014

Last September Anglian rode to the rescue of a couple who had been the victims of a ‘Cowboy builder’.

All over the country, cowboy builders are creating havoc, destroying homes and people’s dreams. Gabrielle Blackman and Dominic Littlewood have decided enough is enough and are doing their bit for angry and distressed consumers everywhere by exposing these cowboys for what they are. Each episode of Cowboy Builders aims to help an aggrieved consumer who has suffered at the hands of dodgy workmen. Gabrielle and her design team renovate the property, whilst Dom seeks out this unreliable builder and confronts him with the evidence of his poor workmanship.

Anglian was proud to help a really deserving family based in Great Yarmouth. Mr & Mrs Robinson, a retired couple who lived happily in their family home for twenty years, before Mrs Robinson was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. It has left her with very little mobility and she is now unable to use the stairs in the house. They wanted to build a single level extension to provide Mrs Robinson with a downstairs bathroom, lounge/bedroom, and give them both a comfortable, easily accessible space to enjoy their time together.

As soon as their planning permission was granted, the family were approached by a local builder who quoted them £20,900 for the job. Despite seemingly good references, the builder’s work was dreadful in every respect. One month later and after handing over nearly £13,000, the couple were shattered by the news from Buildings Control that the builder’s work is so bad that the half-built extension needed to be completely demolished. Mr & Mrs Robinson had a full report done by a building surveyor, who noted that almost every aspect of the build was wrong and needed further investigation. They were living on small pensions and were using their savings to fund the work. They were given an estimate of £25,000 to knock down and rebuild the extension – but having given the builder £13,000 already, they didn’t have enough money left to complete it.

Dominic Littlewood and the team set out to help Mr & Mrs Robinson and contacted Anglian as a reputable and quality supplier of windows and doors, to see if we could help contribute towards the project, which we were able to do. Having supplied windows, doors and Rooftrim, Mr & Mrs Robinson now have an extension which they can enjoy.
