Anglian Blog team interviews Jack Piper

Jack on podium

The Anglian Blog team met up with Jack Piper earlier this week following on from the announcement that Anglian Home Improvements will be sponsoring him this season in the Formula Renault 2-litre BARC championship. We asked Jack several questions in order to find out a bit more about the man behind the wheel;

Are you looking forward to the season ahead?

First of all I would like to say a huge thanks to everyone at Anglian Home Improvements for sponsoring me. It’s great to have such a big name on the car, which looks really good in the new livery. I can’t wait to drive it!

How’s testing going?

I’ve been testing Formula Renault 2-litre BARC this season and now we have the sponsorship in place we’ll be joining the championship at Donington Park next month.

Have you raced at Donington Park before?

I’ve never raced at Donington and most of the other drivers have competed in the previous three rounds already this season so it’s going to be a big challenge, but I’m really looking forward to it.

The good news is we were really on the pace in my recent test at Pembrey in South Wales. I did more than 130 laps during the day and really got to feel comfortable with the car.

Any hairy moments?

I had a bit of an off in the morning on a fast left-hander, ending up in a tyre wall. One of the marshals told me he’d once seen Ayrton Senna go off on the same corner and reckoned if it was OK for such a legend to do it, then it was also good enough for me!

What’s next on the agenda?

We’re planning to test at Donington later this month, which will give my team Falcon Motorsport a chance to set the car up and help me to learn the track.

In fact I’ll have to learn all the tracks this season. We’ll be racing at Brands Hatch, Rockingham and Truxton as well as Donington, but most of my experience so far has been abroad.

What level were you driving at before the Formula Renault 2-litre BARC championship?

After racing karts for several years I made my single-seater debut in the Formula Renault 1600 Championship in Belgium and France in 2007. The highlight came in the final round of the season at Spa when I got my first podium and recorded the fastest lap.

As a fan of formula 1 I often see drivers taking on a lot of fluids during a race, also it’s well documented that you need to be fit to become a driver, how have you coped with the physical demands of a race and what do you do to keep in shape?

I didn’t really appreciate how fit you have to be to drive a racing car until my first time out at Spa a couple of years ago. After a full day’s testing I was shattered and quickly realised I needed to build up a few muscles, especially in my upper body.

I’ve kept in pretty good shape this year, talking of which I’m off to the gym for a spot of fitness training right now.

Thanks Jack for your time, and good luck with the race

I’ll be in touch again soon to let you know how my preparations for the race weekend are going.
