The Ideal Home Show at Christmas opens today, so I have caught up with our Exhibitions manager Caroline to discuss creating our Christmassy stand that is home to Ideal Advice, an area of the show where you can talk to experts in a range of areas; from interior design to improving a home.
Why did you decide to create a stand from scratch for the Ideal Home Show at Christmas?
Visitors to the Ideal Home Show are looking for just that…..an ‘Ideal Home’. It is an opportunity for Anglian to showcase some of our stunning window and doors and what better way to illustrate these than in a true house setting! To tie this into the Christmas show we have added some festive decorations, a little bit of snow and a touch of sparkle here and there. Hopefully it’s something everyone can enjoy, be inspired by and put them in the festive spirit.
Christmas stands aren’t something you usually have to create, so how did you come up with your ideas?
If you look at classic Christmas movies, the home is where all Christmas celebrations happen and the main areas we spend our Christmas’ is by the fire in the living area and up the table eating food. Working up the design of the stand is one of my favourite parts of the build; a concept that starts in my mind’s eye and is brought to life by our amazing stand builders; Maison Ltd is where the magic really happens. Opting for a very traditional looking Georgian style property really conjures up a ‘Christmas home’ for me, and so this was the starting point. From here we added our product – traditional sliding sash windows, and a classic door in burgundy finish with some festive decorative glazing. Then it was time to think about how to finish the interior. I have opted for a classic, contemporary approach – quite often ‘less is more’ in these exhibition environments. I didn’t have a process or plan as such for adding the finishing touches to the rooms – I have made things simple by finishing them in a style that I would opt to have in my own home!
What furniture, decorations and lighting have you used for the stand?
Inside the house we have created an open plan dining and living area, complete with furniture supplied by Multiyork. The Burghley dining room table and chairs look very homely and rustic in the dining area, whilst the matching Burghley coffee table in the living area ties the rooms together beautifully. This solid oak collection combines cool grey painted legs with an oak veneer finish top, maintaining a neutral theme throughout the interior which is brought to life with Christmas red accessories. The Burghley range is a perfect complement to any home interior.
The living area is cosy and relaxing. We have used a ‘Wild Mushroom’ paint finish on the walls which has a hint of pink within it, adding to the ambience of the area and harmonises with our Christmas red accessories. The glow from the fireplace adds warmth and charm to this room. I’m sure many homes will be looking to create this vibe over Christmas.
Who will be on hand at the Ideal Advice area?
There will be lots of different people throughout the show, including Anglian brand ambassador and TV presenter Philippa Forrester who will be on hand providing her top tips on how to save energy and money during the winter months. Also, our resident interior design blogger, Jo Ridout from A Passion for Homes will be sharing her recommendations on how to create the perfect interiors for your home . Other experts include Ingrid Millington, Susan Llewelyn Associates, Claire Gay and the Upholstery Skills Centre, so if you’re looking for advice on DIY, Gardening for now or Spring, new home improvements or just some top tips on interiors and design, make sure you visit the ‘Ideal Advice’ area.
What other stands would you recommend visiting?
It depends on what you are looking for. There are so many stands here, covering a range of different areas of the home that there is something for everyone. Thomas Sanderson have a great range of window shutters and designs that work within bay windows – this caught my eye as they would be a great addition to our own stand design. The Interiors and Home Accessories is also a great place to visit; there are so many fun, quirky and unusual products here, it really captures your imagination and certainly inspires you to get into the Christmas mood. My favourite, not really a stand….but would have to be the ice rink! After all the planning and building of the stand who couldn’t resist a quick skate on the ice – it is Christmas after all!
