The Premier League season kicked off on Saturday with Anglian Home Improvement’s partners Norwich City taking on Everton. Hughton will be pleased to get his first point of the new campaign and see new striker Ricky van Wolfswinkel on the scoresheet.
The first half was one of few chances for City, with Everton creating the best opportunities to break the deadlock. Shots from youngster Ross Barkley and Mirallas flew wide of the goal, whilst at the other end the best chance fell to Hoolahan, but experienced defender Sylvain Distin was on hand to hammer the ball clear.
The goal came in the second half from unlikely scorer Steven Whittaker. The left back made a superb jinking run between defenders, finding himself one-on-one with the keeper Tim Howard. His first shot looked like it was going to be a strikers finish, but it curled into the post, fortunately it bounced back to the Scottish international who slotted it into the empty net.
It didn’t take long for Everton to equalise though as Ross Barkley let loose a rocket, firing into the top right corner of the net.
They took the lead 3 minutes later when Pienaar picked out Jelavic in the penalty area. His shot was parried into the path of Seamus Coleman who had the simple job of tapping it into the empty net.
The game took one final twist, when Whittaker’s vollied shot turned into the perfect cross for Wolfswinkel to head beautifully into the top right corner of the net.
2-2 was the final score as new signing Nathan Redmond was named the Anglian Home Improvements Man of the Match for his tireless performance in midfield.
