You may have seen our blog yesterday about how important last night would be to the men of the British gymnast team, and how they have trained for years for this one moment. They all wanted to go to the Olympics and in a qualifier the team, captained by Louis Smith, had to score 15’s for each of their individual disciplines to ensure their destiny in the London Olympics 2012.
Well, they all gave a scintillating performance to guarantee the teams place in the Olympics, and they even finished first out of the 8 groups, which is fantastic considering 4 members of the team slipped up in November.
Louis Smith, who is sponsored by Anglian Home Improvements, put in a particularly brilliant performance with some breath-taking gymnastics on the pommel horse, which lead the team to glory. The O2 arena went wild when Smith landed back on the mat, pumping his fist in the air!
The strict training regime continued throughout Christmas, set by technical director Eddie Van Hoof, in a bid to make sure the GB team was fully fit, nimble and mentally prepared for what was a massive challenge. After some of the team fell during their performances last year, nerves were always going to play a big part of the preparation for last night’s event, but Louis Smith captained his team superbly. He gathered them together and told them all to concentrate, stay calm and think of it as a bigger National Championship, even when it meant he couldn’t focus on his own preparation routine.
So both the male and female Great Britain gymnastic teams are through to the Olympics. Make sure you support them throughout the summer and hopefully they can make the nation proud by bringing home a medal. Make sure you come back soon to see the latest blog from Louis Smith and other Olympic athletes.
