Anglian Home Improvements are the sponsors of this years Britain in Bloom. We have been receiving applications for upcoming projects for communities across the UK. Here is one from Rustington.
To create a Wildlife Area in the corner of the Recreation Ground. Currently, the beach is Rustington’s only Wildlife Area. Advice on the area’s development was sought from Sussex Wildlife Trust. A Meeting with staff members, committee members and pupils from Summerlea Primary School was arranged. Following the Survey, we received a Report and this is the basis for the development..
• The area to be demarcated by 2 rows of native trees
• 3 distinctive gardens
wildlife including a stumpery
• A path to be made to wind through the area
• Bird boxes, feeding stations, insect hotels to be constructed
Our current finances, (all from fund raising events) have allowed us to begin work on the site, but only sufficient to start on the summer/butterfly garden. The boundary trees were donated.
To complete this garden we need funding for:-
• 2 fruit trees
• Other summer plants
the spring garden
• bulbs and wild flower seeds
• membrane and woodchip
• materials to build bird boxes and feeding stations
The development of this area will be a community effort with pupils and parents from the local primary school. Members of the local Horticultural Association and allotmenteers have been asked to heel in cuttings of soft fruit trees to be used in the tree boundary.
The project outcomes provide a wildlife area for the village for all to enjoy and to actively involve the pupils helping to maintain the area.
Rustington has a population of approximately 13,000 and the Woodlands Recreation Ground is its main leisure facility, with only a very small shared (with adjoining Town) recreation area on the western boundary of the Parish, with limited usage.
