Arsenal brought an international flavour to the pitch with its mix of young players who were eager to play Norwich’s spirited team of mostly academy players that comprised a number of young senior professionals. Unfortunately for Norwich, they were out-played in the 0 – 5 defeat.
Young players in the Arsenal team wanted to impress from the outset in order to aid their selection for this coming weekend’s Premier League game against Tottenham.
With their need to impress, Ju Young Park opened the scoring after 6 minutes by finishing off a crashing shot from Yossi Benayoun. City absorbed the pressure and were able to return it through the efforts of Matt Ball and a long range lob that was cleared from the line by Ignasi Miquel. As the first half drew to a close, the Gunners kept up the pressure.
Finally, they were successful, minutes before the whistle, through the efforts of Arshavin.
The second half started as the first had finished; with great gusto.
After a couple of dangerous efforts, an alert Wooten halted the advance and the game began to favour the Canaries. Jamar Loza had a cracking 55th minute effort go over the bar and, following some inspired wing play by Josh Damkin, Richard Brindley had a shot at goal, only for his driving effort to go wide.
However, the run of play returned to the Gunners and, within minutes, Benik Afobe scored a third goal for them from a tight angle. Goals then followed from Andrey Arshavin and, on 87 minutes, Ioanee Benayoun finished off with a magnificent goal, to the visitors’ delight.
Arsenal demonstrated the talent that the team holds and put it all to good use on the pitch.
Some of Anglian’s staff attended the match so we asked them for their thoughts on the game…
Shey commented, “I found the game highly entertaining, albeit a bit one-sided. Norwich tried to play decent flowing football but were out-classed by a very good Arsenal side. The Norwich keeper made an outstanding save from a penalty but, in fairness, should really have been sent off for the foul before that. It was a really good atmosphere and a quality night out.”
Bernardino added “The reserves match was a great night out with Norwich, unfortunately, being outclassed by the Arsenal.”
It was an unfortunate result for the local team. However, it was felt to be a great effort against one of the best sides in the world.
